How do you prepare for the exams?

For the latest exam dates and deadlines, see http://www.beanactuary.org/exams/preliminary/?fa=computer-based-test-schedule

Exam P/1 is offered every early January, March, May and November. Exam FM is offered every early February, April, June and December. Application forms for the preliminary exams are available on BeAnActuary.org. In particular, CAS will give credit for MLC; SOA will not give credit for 3L.

Some of these exam can be taken locally at Binghamton. Binghamton University is an examination center for the first two actuarial exams. The University itself has nothing to do with the preparation of the exam questions, it is merely an agent of SOA / CAS, administering the exams for the convenience of the Binghamton students.

Order
Possible order of exams taken. Note that thorough knowledge of calculus is needed for all exams.

Here we focus on the first few exams: Exams P/1, FM/2 and MLC, which most undersgraduate students take. Due to low demand among undergraduate students, there is limited resource on campus available for exams beyond Exams P/1, FM/2 and MLC. Interested students will have to reply on their own to study the materials.

Note that a student can take Exam FM/2 while or before he/she takes Exam P/1. The knownledge to Exam P/1 is not required for Exam FM/2. Thus it is even recommended sometimes that students pass these two exams before the start of the junior year, so that they have better chances to find internship opportunities for the coming summer between junior and senior and ultimately lead to actuarial careers.

Students are recommended to work hard to prepare for these exams because these exams are not easy. Besides the difficulty of decode the words, many of these problems require to do several steps. You must understand very well the theory to solve these problems timely.

The courses offered by the Department of Mathematical Sciences help students to prepare at least three actuarial exams as follows. Click the exam on the left column for more information.

Exam P/1

Students interested in specializing in actuarial science should prepare for Exam P/1, as soon as possible.

To pass Exam P/1, students should first take the Calculus sequence and Math 447, Introduction to Probability and Statistics, followed by Math 449, Problem Solving in Actuarial Sciences, which is a course specially designed for the preparation for passing Exam P/1.

Exam FM/2

Exam FM/2 is on Financial Mathematics. Math 346 covers the syllabus in Exam FM/2. The prerequisite for Math 346 is Calculus II.
