Calculus I: Text
Fall 2009

The text for Math 221 is Calculus, (sometimes called Single Variable Calculus) 6th Edition, by James Stewart. It is published by the Brooks/Cole division of Thomson. The version available in the University book store covers the material in Calculus II as well and will be used by the Department in the Spring 2010 semester.

Any errors discovered in the book will be posted in errors

Calculators: You may want a graphing calculator to help with homework, but a calculator is not required. In fact, their overuse is heavily discouraged. Neither calculators nor any other electronic item, e.g. a cell phone as clock, may be visible to you during tests.

Various software applications are very useful in many parts of Mathematics. In particular the programs Maple, Mathematica and Matlab can do many calculations, both numeric and symbolic, and can be used to generate high quality graphs. All three programs are available on various University computers. They are also available for purchase at very reasonable student rates. You are not required to use any such programs. Indeed, it is not clear that they are helpful when you are learning the new ideas in calculus. But later on, when applying calculus (especially in engineering) these tools are indispensable.
