ALGEBRA SCHOOL

Algebra is considered one of the most important branches of Mathematics having a lot of applications not only to other areas of Mathematics but also to other subjects such as Biology, Physics and on which hundreds of people around the world base their research upon. Nowadays the level of research on this area in our country is very low.

We considered that there is an extreme need to raise in our undergraduate and graduate students in our schools the interest to do research in this area. We also need them to understand that a good knowledge of the subject is fundamental to the development of the country. A good understanding of the algebraic methods and ideas has been the key to many discoveries in genetics, quantum physics, non-associative algebras, representation theory, homological algebra, algebraic geometry, among others. Unfortunately, many of these applications are not known in our schools.

The algebra conference will have as a main goal to initiate undergraduate and graduate students in Latin-American universities into the study of different fundamental topics of algebras such as representation theory, Hopf algebras, associative and non-associative rings, group rings, loop algebras, and other important topics.

We know that the research in Colombia is behind compared to universities in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, and Mexico. Those countries have shown a great advance in research throughout conferences and scientific events they have offered. As a consequence of this, they have created strong research groups that have taken the level research on those countries ahead of ours.

We consider that the academic exchange of our students with students from other countries is an excellent first approach with the world of research and a conference in algebra will provide the proper environment to help them get started into it.

Objectives:

  • To prepare students for the incoming "XVII Coloquio Latinoamericano de Álgebra".
  • To initiate undergraduate students with the study of different topics in algebra.

  • To provide an academic exchange of graduate students in Colombia with students from other countries.

  • To generate an environment of academic and scientific discussion among the assisting students by means of task groups.

  • To provide academic exchange among Colombian researchers and researchers from other countries.

Program:

The first edition of the school will be during the week of the XVII Latin American Colloquium of Algebra. During those days, each student will take two mini-courses, one in the morning and other in the afternoon.

The list of the courses will be publish on June 25th and the dateline for the pre-registration will be July 6th.
