Math 304-03: Homework - Fall 2008

You should do these homework problems immediately after the corresponding material is covered in class. In fact, it is a good idea to read the current section and look over the assignment before class.

Do not fall behind. You need to practice techniques and become familiar with ideas when they are first introduced, since they will be used many times in the rest of the course. If you have trouble understanding something then you should try doing more than the assigned problems on the subject.

Some homework problems are labeled as "(x)n" for problem #n in exercise group (x). For example, problem (3)1 is on page 10. Some are labeled as "Sc n" for problem #n in the Supplementary Exercises for Chapter c. For example, problem S1 3 is on page 46.

Date Problems Comments

9/4 S1 8,9,13,16
(9)1, (10)1-7, S1 17-20
The problems in the second line are based on 1.6,
so you might want to wait until Friday to work on them.
9/8 (14)1-4
9/11 (15)1-8, S2 1,2 Practice multiplying matrices until you can do it correctly, every time!
9/12 (17)1, (18)1-2, (20)1-3, S2 3 Read 2.5.3 and 2.5.4 before doing these.
9/15 (21)2-5, S2 4,5
9/17 (22)1-3, (25)1-3, S2 9-12

11/4 S4 15-19
11/9 (56)1, (58)1, S5 2,3 Use row operations to calculate the determinants.
Do not use cofactor expansions!
11/11 S5 5,6,7
11/13 (58)1, (60)1, S5 2 (58)1 and S5 2 were assigned on 11/9. This time, pick at least half the problems and
start each calculation with a row or column cofactor expansion.
After the first step you may use any methods to complete the calculation.
11/15 (55)1-2, (59)1-2, (61)1
11/18 (62)1, S5 8
11/25 (64)1, (65)1-4, S6 1 Read Ch 6 through Lemma 6.1.5.
