Title: Topology of oriented matroids

Abstract: Oriented matroids are combinatorial objects which arise naturally in various contexts in combinatorics and discrete geometry, including graph theory and hyperplane arrangements. Despite being purely combinatorial beasts, they have strong connections to topology. This talk will give a topologist's survey of the tantalizing mix of strong positive theorems, weird counterexamples, and wide open problems regarding these connections.
