Text Editors. Some people use vim, others use emacs. You'll need
something if you plan to make latex documents, or write scripts
Here is a small list of some of the text editors currently available
on the deparment computers:
- gvim - the ultimate text editor
for people who don't like the command line. (see next entry)
- vim - the ultimate text editor.
The learning curve is steep, but the view from the top is
amazing. Here are some tutorials:
- A vim tutorial
for new vim users.
- A great
tutorial for really getting to know vi/ex.
- emacs - I hear
it's nice.
- pico - a command line editor, used by the
pine email client.
-
kedit - KDE's text editor. It seems okay.
- nedit - a multipurpose text
editor for X.
For Windows XP, I still recommend
vim.
Alternatively, if you're just doing latex and don't want to learn
vim, no matter how much it will enhance your life, you can try
TeXnicCenter; a
development environment for latex.
