The "No B.S." Rule
If
you are confident that you know how to do the first part of a
problem, but are unsure as to how to finish, you may choose to write
"No B.S." at the bottom of your work for the problem, and
do no more work on it. All work that appears below "No B.S."
(but before the next question) will be ignored.
If everything that appears above "No B.S." is correct, you will be graded for the work you've done, as well as a small bonus for knowing the limits of your abilities. This even applies to problems with absolutely no other work. The size of this bonus will vary, but it will probably be around 20% of the points that were taken off.
If anything above "No B.S." is incorrect, you will be graded normally for the error, and will receive an additional penalty for being confident in incorrect work. Again, the size of this penalty will vary, but will be around 20% the points you earned for the problem.
This rule cannot make a 5-point problem give more than 5 points, but it can give negative points, if "No B.S." is used incorrectly.
Ex: Evaluate (2+3)-1 (10 points).
(2+3)-1
=5-1
=10000000000
This would be worth 5 points, out of 10.
(2+3)-1
=5-1
No B.S.
This would be worth 7 points.
(2+3)-1
=10-1
No B.S.
This would be worth 3 points.
