The Executive Committee proposes the following provisional version of a Charge to the Educational Policy Committee. We welcome comments from members. Final approval will be sought at the Spring Business Meeting.
The Educational Policy Committee shall advise the Seaway Section Executive Committee on issues of public policy bearing on the Section's mission to improve education in the mathematical sciences. The Committee shall concern itself with both pre-college and college-level matters relating to the policies of governmental and other educational agencies in New York State, Ontario, and Quebec. The Committee shall report each year to the Executive Committee at the annual spring meeting. They may report more often if there is a need.
The Committee's tasks are to aid the Executive Committee in
(1) informing section members about significant changes and developments in public policy,
(2) recommending policy to reflect members' views on particular issues,
(3) promoting and facilitating greater involvement by members in matters of mathematical sciences education at all levels.
Questions and other work may be referred to the Committee by the Executive Committee, other committees of the Section, individual members, or the public. On occasion, the committee may respond informally to questions seeking opinion or advice but its normal course will be to recommend policy statements which it will present, together with background information, to the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee will then do one of the following:
(1) return the policy statement to the Educational Policy Committee for further consideration, noting questions and concerns;
(2) endorse the Policy Statement and submit it to the membership of the Section for consideration at a Business Meeting of the Section. In this case the policy statement must be published in the Seaway Current with notice that it will be on the agenda of a future Business Meeting (normally the next Business Meeting as announced in that issue of the Seaway Current);
On occasion, the Executive Committee may feel that it is necessary or possible to act more quickly than these procedures allow. In such cases, the executive Committee may
(3) endorse the policy statement and issue a memo of support from the Executive Committee.
