Although the weather is dreary on this mid-February day by the shore of Lake Ontario, putting my mind to Seaway Section business is a welcome tonic. When I think about the Section I am heartened by the way so many people find time in their busy schedules to make things happen in this organization.
The Distinguished Teaching Award Committee, chaired by Steve West from SUNY Geneseo, has been hard at work since the Fall. This morning I had the pleasure of speaking with Professor Vasily Cateforis from SUNY Potsdam to congratulate him as the recipient of this year's Distinguished Teaching Award. It is a great pleasure to honour someone whose work has benefitted so many students and has led many to careers in mathematics.
After the Fall Meeting at Adirondack Community College, we established the Seaway NExT/PFF Advisory Committee. This new committee includes two National NExT Fellows (Margaret Morrow from SUNY Plattsburgh and Mary Shepherd from SUNY Potsdam) and two Seaway NexT Fellows (Maureen Cox from St. Bonaventure University and Richard Cramer-Benjaminfrom Niagara University). It will bolster the work of Cheri Boyd, Jack Graver, and Luise Kappe, who initiated joint Seaway NexT and Preparing Future Faculty events in the Seaway Section. At the Oswego meeting, Preparing Future Faculty and Seaway NExT will present a joint afternoon workshop starting with a Friday luncheon. For more information contact Cheri L. Boyd clboyd@naz.edu or Jack Graver jegraver@syr.edu
Please don't forget to read the Charge to the Educational Policies Committee that is posted on the Seaway Section's website and which appears in this issue of the Current. Adoption of this charge will be formalized at our business meeting on April 15. It is interesting to realize that postsecondary institutions in the Seaway Section are geared for students coming out of three different jurisdictions; New York State, Ontario, and Quebec. These systems are quite different from one another. The Educational Policies Committee has a role to play in helping us to know about the great variety that is close at hand. We have a unique opportunity to gain benefits that usually come from traveling to distant places.
I am looking forward to a wonderful meeting in Oswego, when the weather will be warmer. In Ontario, April 14 and 15 is soon after classes and just before exams. Hearing talks by William Dunham, a celebrity at Queen's since students read Journey Through Genius for one of our courses, Seaway Section colleagues Deborah Lawrence from the Sage Colleges and Michael Grady of the SUNY Fredonia Department of Physics, and our Gehman Lecturer, Sidney Resnick from the School of Operations Research and Industrial Engineering at Cornell University, will be just the charge I need to carry me through the weeks when exam marking takes over mylife.
