Seaway Section of the MAA - Chair's Message

CHAIR'S MESSAGE

Jack Graver, Chair

Spring 1996

The bylaws have been passed on by the national committee on sections to the board of governors with their recommendation for approval; the board of governors meets next in August.

We now have a home page on the world wide web: call up www.maa.org and follow the menu to the Seaway Section. (Note, the older address gopher.maa.org will not get you to our new home page.) We owe many thanks to our first vice chair Luise-Charlotte Kappe and her son Dietrich who together set up and are maintaining our home page.

The results of the many hours of work put in by the members of the Gehman Lecture Committee and the Distinguished Teaching Award Committee will be felt at this meeting. Those members are: Tom Tucker(chair), David Isaacson and Joe Straight (GLC); David Farnsworth(chair), Mort Goldberg, Grace Orzech and Ed Hoefer (DTAC).

We now have six standing committees and a Nominating Committee in addition to the Executive Committee. When you add to this two local arrangements committees each year, it is not surprising that in any one year forty or so members of the section are called upon to serve the section on one of its committees. In order to keep this service from becoming a burden, we have adopted short (two year) terms for most committee assignments. But to make this work we need a large number of members willing to serve periodically. One factor that is making committee service easier is that much of a committee's work can now be conducted by e-mail. Also this makes it much easier to balance a committee both geographically and by type of institution.

If you have not served on a section committee recently, please consider doing so. The best way to let the Executive Committee know of your willingness to serve is to fill out and return the Member Information Sheet that will be in your packet at the meeting.
