Seaway Section of MAA -- Chair's Note

CHAIR'S NOTE

Jack Graver, Fall 1996

I would like to share with you a few items which I found interesting at the summer meetings in Seattle.

Our bylaws have received final approval by the board of governors and are now officially in effect.

There is more and more mathematics and mathematics related information available on the internet. In fact the Joint Policy Board has selected mathematics on the Internet as the theme for Mathematical Awareness Week 1997 (April 20-26). The JBP expects that this theme will be of wide national interest and could include such subjects as computer security and encryption, data mining, network analysis, information theory, and the availability of mathematical information on the world wide web. They would like to have reactions to these topics as well as suggestions for others. They are also interested in visuals that might be approp riate for the theme poster and MAW web page. Send comments and suggestions to Mike Harris at . For information on MAW from previous years, consult the web site http://forum.swathmore.edu/maw/. Our section web page and all sorts of interesting information is available at the MAA web page http://maa.org.

The national is still working on the MAA/Department Liaison Program (an extension of the MAA reps.). If your department has not designated a MAA liaison, please urge your chairman to do so and to do so soon.

If your department is not aware of Project Next, it should be. The project offers an excellent program of new faculty members in mathematics. While teaching is its main focus, all areas of professional development are deliberated. If you want more information about this excellent program, contact Jim Leitzel at Dept. of Math.; Univ. of New Hampshire; Durham, NH 03824-3591.

Let me close this homily with my usual plea: If you have not served on a section committee recently, please consider doing so. The best way to let the Executive Committee know of your willingness to serve is to fill out and return the Member Information Sheet that will be in your packet at the meeting.
