Greetings from San Antonio, where the sun shines and it is "somewhat on the cool side", that is how the locals called temperatures in the seventies. It feels always great to recharge the batteries in such an atmosphere and get new and fresh ideas. The bad part is always the reentry into the icebox in the Northeast.
As last year, I met many Seaway Section members and talked to them, and got a lot of business done, faster and more pleasant than e-mail can do it. I also got a new idea from our sister organization, the AMS, while attending their banquet. I have always been looking for a way to honor our members who have been in the MAA for twenty-five years or more. Let's do it in the same way as it was done at the banquet in San Antonio: at the dinner on Friday night in Syracuse we honor all of those present who have been members of the MAA for twenty-five years or more, and the one among them who has been a member for the longest time will receive a prize. Make sure you are there!
In my message a year ago, I talked about our plans to start a Project NExT in the Seaway Section. Thanks to the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of Cheri Boyd and Jack Graver, we will have our first program of Project NExT at the Syracuse meeting in April. More details about this you can find in this Seaway Current or on our web page. On behalf of the Seaway Section I want to thank Cheri and Jack for all their efforts in bringing this about.
This is my fourth and last message as chair of the section. By the end of the Syracuse meeting Grace Orzech will take over as chair. After one year as immediate past chair, my term as a member of the executive committee is over. But I still plan to stay involved in the work of the section, as many of my predecessors have done. I think I know their reasons: otherwise they would miss something they enjoyed doing all the time. Of course, work is involved and it can get pretty hectic if deadlines for the section and at my own work here at the university are on the same day.
Among other things, one major part of my job is to find people who want to serve on our many committees and as "other officers", as they are called on the second page of the Seaway Current. Fortunately, I never had any problem finding people who wanted to get involved in the section. Several walked right up to me and asked if I had something to do for them in the section. Contrary to what you might experience at your own department where it is hard to find volunteers, and if you volunteer for something, you know fully well that you may be stuck with it for the rest of your life, our terms on committees and those of the "other officers" are not more than two years. If you have never worked for the section, I suggest you think about it and approach my successor, if she has something to do for you. I am sure you don't want to miss out on all the enjoyment I had in working for the section together with all those wonderful people: Lots of work, but a very rewarding and gratifying experience.
