Broome Community College Description

HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

This is our Jubilee Year at Broome Community College!!

At the time the first class graduated from Broome Community College in 1949, the school was known as The New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences at Binghamton. The original institute was one of five founded in the state in 1946 and it opened its doors to students in the fall of 1947. The first programs offered were exclusively occupational in nature and included curricula for Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical Technology, as well as Medical and Technical Office Assistant.

In 1953, under provisions of the State Community College Law, New York relinquished control of the school to its new sponsor, Broome County, and the name was changed to Broome County Technical Institute. In 1956, as the scope of the curriculum had expanded enough to warrant the name of Broome Technical Community College. Finally in 1971, the name was changed to Broome Community College to reflect a broader mission of service to the community that the school has undertaken.

For its first ten years, the school was housed in downtown Binghamton. In 1957 the College moved to its present location just north of the city. Titchener Hall, dedicated in 1963, was the first addition to the original campus. The Learning Resource Center, which houses the library, was completed five years later, and the Business Building opened in 1972. A new Applied Technology Building was ready to accomodate classes and laboratories beginning in the spring semester of 1987 and expansion of the Student Center was completed in 1988. Recent campus construction includes a new Campus Services building, a complete renovation of Titchener Hall, and the new Decker Health Sciences building, scheduled to open in Fall 1997.

MATHEMATICS AT BCC

The faculty of the Mathematics Department, with 15 full time and 11 adjunct members, is dedicated to promoting excellence in mathematics. Our developmental programs blend hands-on discovery activities and real-world problems into a curriculum designed to show students the relevance of mathematics in the work-place and the importance of mathematics to problem-sloving in other disciplines. The graphing calculator is an essential tool to for deepening the students' understanding on our Calculus courses. Each year our Quality Assuance Program includes a group of international students from Central America and Caribbean, and we have also developed courses tailored to the specfic needs of local industries such as NYNEX and Universal Instruments Corporation.

Our faculty members take an active interest in the mathematics programs at the area high schools. Regular meetings with high school mathematics faculty held on the BCC compus provide the opportunity for lively exchange of ideas on topics from Tech Prep to Advanced Placement. Our involvement with the Southern Tier Math Teachers Association also helps us to keep abreast of developments in our local area.

As we host this, our third MAA meeting in the last 20 years, the members of our department are vitally involved in today's educational issues, working to make a solid contribution to our community and to our profession. We are proud of our programs and of our students.
