Fall '97 Meeting at Siena College

SIENA COLLEGE

Siena College, founded in 1937 by the Franciscan Friars, is a coeducational, independent, liberal arts college with a Franciscan tradition, enrolling approximately 2,700 undergraduates. The 155 acre campus is located north of Albany, in the quiet, residential community of Loudonville. The college offers programs of study in the Arts, in the Sciences, and in Business leading to the baccalaureate and MBA degree, and it provides continuing education programs for the surrounding community. Many of these programs of study are augmented by computer laboratories. Approximately 80% of the student body live on campus, and all have access to email and the internet.

The Mathematics program at Siena is designed to prepare students for an exciting and challenging world. Graduates of the program have gone on to become actuaries, statisticians, engineers, teachers and technical consultants for industrial giants such as GE and IBM. In addition, the department has a strong record in the preparation of students for graduate study in mathematics at both the master's and doctorate level.

The department offers three different degrees, the BA or BS in Mathematics, and the BS in Applied Mathematics. The first two years of the program are identical for all three options, so there is plenty of time for students to make their degree choice. The greatest difference between options lies in the number of supporting science courses and the choice of upper level mathematics electives.

One of the unique aspects of the program is the extent to which computer algebra systems have been integrated into the curriculum. The faculty conceived, designed, and implemented an innovative calculus laboratory for introductory calculus classes, and many of the upper level offerings also include assignments and projects with a computing component. The department has recently upgraded its laboratory computing equipment to 200 mhz Power Computing computers, running the most recent version of the Mac operating system. The faculty is committed to excellence in teaching and to professional development through research and curriculum enhancement.
