Principal Presenter: Diane Driscoll Schwartz, Ithaca College
In this workshop, participants will learn about the active approach to first year calculus developed by the Ithaca College Calculus Group (Steve Hilbert, John Maceli, Eric Robinson, Diane Schwartz and Stan Seltzer). In the workshop, we will explore the use of classroom activities and long term projects to develop understanding of concepts, to improve students' problem solving skills, and to provide unifying threads for the calculus sequence. Students typically work with these materials in cooperative groups, both in and out of the classroom. Problems often have open ended components. Many benefit from the use of some sort of calculator or computer technology, but most can be assigned with as little as a scientific calculator available. The materials can be used effectively in conjunction with a variety of primary textbooks.
Participants will have the opportunity to work directly with the materials, to learn about how to integrate them into the classroom, and and to discuss issues raised by the transition to this approach to teaching the course.
Diane Driscoll Schwartz is Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Ithaca College. She has a BA in Economics from Cornell University, and MA and PhD in Mathematical Sciences from Binghamton University. She is the author of Conjecture and Proof, An Introduction to Mathematical Thinking (Saunders) and co-author, with the rest of the Ithaca College Calculus Group, of Calculus, An Active Approach with Projects (Wiley). She has given many talks and workshops throughout the United States on the use of projects and activities in first year calculus. Other members of the Ithaca College Calculus Group will be present for portions of the workshop.
