Every five years sections of the MAA are invited to nominate a section member for the Certificate of Meritorious Service awarded by the MAA. This year the Seaway Section had the opportunity and the nominations committee, consisting of Jack Graver (Syracuse University), Luise-Charlotte Kappe (Binghamton University) and Donald Trasher (SUNY Geneseo), nominated Howard E. Bell (Brock University) for this honor. On January 8, 1998 at the Prize and Awards session of the AMS, AWM and MAA, Howard received the Meritorious Service Award for his more than twenty-years of dedicated and faithful service to the Seaway Section.
During this period he served as First Vice-Chair (1978-79), Chair (1979-81) and as Section Governor (1988-91), and served as host and coordinator of the section meeting at Brock University and presented eleven talks at section meetings. Further, he has worked to facilitate communications and mailings to our Canadian members, encouraging their involvement in Section activities and working toward the integration of the two communities, the U.S. and Canada, in mathematics and mathematics education.
As Section Governor, I was pleased to be present in Baltimore for this awards ceremony and was heartened by Howard's words pledging continued involvement and service to the Section. Also present to congratulate Howard from the Executive Committee were Chair Luise-Charlotte Kappe and Secretary-Treasurer Edwin Hoefer.
The next time the Seaway Section will be eligible for the meritorious service award is 2002 with the award presented in January of 2003.
