Title: The Joint Meetings and the Employment Center - A Panel Discussion
Panelists:
Dan Ghezzi
Bill Hooper
Fred Kluempen
Kathryn Nyman (Cornell)
Hanxiang Peng
Ron Sperber
January 10-14, 2001, each of the panelists attended the Joint Meeting of the AMS and MAA in New Orleans and took part in the Employment Center. By participating in the Employment Center, mathematicians have primarily the opportunity to interview with employers in academia, but some employers from industry are also available to conduct interviews. Several of our panelists also gave talks at the meeting.
At this seminar, each of the panelists will first make a 5 minute presentation about their experience at the Jont Meeting. Then, we will give time for discussion and questions from the audience. In particular, this will give you a chance to obtain valuable information about what goes on during the interviews, including what types of questions are asked and what kinds of experience attracts employers. This is extremely important for anyone who will be looking for a job, which is probably everyone!
