CALCULUS - REFORMED AND TRADITIONAL

Currently, I am teaching in two settings that take separate approaches to calculus instruction. One institution uses graphing utilities, as well as a reformed text, while the other institution restricts the use of graphing aides and the approach is decidedly traditional.
In this talk, I want to explore some of the decisions that lead to these different approaches of instruction, as well as some of the outcomes of those decisions. This talk is not a study of any kind, but rather a subjective collection of thoughts and experiences which I have amassed over the past semesters.

PASSING THE PUTNAM EXAM

We will discuss the right reasons why every institution should participate in the Putnam Exam and the positive impact on the students and the profession such a participation has. We will also discuss the wrong reasons to participate along with the negative impact there. In addition, we will find out the right reason why our school cannot beat Harvard and why that is irrelevant.
