People with two scales never know what they weigh

When I was undergraduate, I often wondered what one does in industry with a degree in math. As a statistical consultant, I can share with you one facet of math "in the real world". My talk will consist of three parts: an introduction to industrial statistics and the six-sigma program widely in use in industry, a jaunt into linear models and design of experiment, and lastly the solution to a problem related to the title. A bit of basic statistics and linear algebra is helpful but not essential for this presentation.

Matthew Koehler is currently studying for a PhD at SUNY Binghamton with research focused in statistics. He received his BS in Mathematics from Elmira College (1995) and his MA from SUNY Binghamton (1999). He is a fellow in the "Preparing Future Faculty" Program in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
