For most students, the leap from learning material that is presented in the classroom to having to do actual research is a large one. One way to help is to have a seminar for undergraduates where they have to read a paper from the mathematical literature and present it to their peers. At Binghamton University, we have such a seminar in algebra for undergraduates since over thirty years. Modeled after the German "Proseminar", it ushers students into the dynamic world of current mathematics and acts as a catalyst in deciding to go on to graduate school. Last semester, I was a mentor in this seminar. In this talk, I will discuss my experiences there and my thoughts on it.
