What do calculators, textbooks and shoe laces have in common? They are all tools for studying mathematics.
In this talk, I will introduce the concepts of knot theory, and discuss some of its basic definitions and results. This talk assumes no background in knot theory. Only knowledge of polynomials is required.
This talk is accessible to students of all levels.
Steven Tedford is a graduate student at Binghamton University where he is persuing a Ph.D. in combinatorics. He received his Bachelors Degree from Marist College, in Poughkeepsie N.Y. in 1997, and his Masters Degree from Binghamton University in 1999. He is a fellow in the "Preparing Future Faculty" Program in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
