TIMSS, Third International Mathematics and Science Study: What does it say? How can we learn from it? What should we change? How do we change?

Jim Matthews, Siena College

Film footage of typical American and Japanese secondary school mathematics classes from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) will be shown. Other components of TIMSS, including test results, will be presented. The preceding informational part of the presentation will be followed by an argument that we must make fundamental changes in the way we teach mathematics at the primary, secondary and college levels. Some examples and suggestions for how we can make necessary changes will be given.

A panel discussion will follow this presentation. Anyone interested in further discussion can join the speaker and panelists for lunch afterwards.
