Report on PFF visits to Broome Community College

The fall 1999 semester was a busy one. We had four Binghamton University graduate students either teaching courses or giving guest lectures at BCC.

I observed Fred Kluempen who was teaching MAT 182 (Calculus II) at night. He did an excellent job. We are very happy that he is working for us. Fred has a wonderful rapport with his students. He presented the calculus in a way was understandable without sacrificing rigor.

Dan Clouse is on a one-year temporary full-time appointment (1999-2000). I observed him teaching MAT 119 (Math for Elementary Education majors). He is doing well. Dan is pitching in with departmental committees and is learning a tremendous amount about the difference between teaching professionally at the community college level and teaching as a graduate student at BU.

Joanna Su spoke to Dan Clouse's MAT 119 class about recreational math. The talk was a good fit for this class since these students are future elementary education teachers.

Jeff Forrester spoke to our SQC orientation class. He was animated and interesting. One can tell that he has solid experience in lecturing to a group. I discussed the possibility of mentoring Jeff. He seemed interested since he does not have as much opportunity to teach in a traditional classroom.

The semester ended with a dinner at the Great China Buffet. Jeff Forrester, Bill Hooper, Joanna Su, Lori Fern, Dr. and Dr. Kappe (from BU), Fred Kluempen, Dan Clouse, Mort Goldberg (from BU and BCC), Paul O'Heron, Mary Wolyniak, Jean Krichbaum (from BCC) and Denise Raboli (from King's) attended. We are going to try to find a course for Lori for the spring semester. She is interested in teaching statistics. We discussed teaching and the various math courses taught at BCC and BU. We also got to know each other better. The dinner was a fun time.

We are looking forward to resuming the grant next semester.

Sincerely,
Jean Krichbaum
