On Thursday April 26, 2001, Friedrich Kluempen ( SUNY Binghamton) presented a colloquium entitled " Dividing a cake among hungry siblings: Can it be done without a food fight?" to a group of Ithaca College people. The audience also included faculty and students from SUNY Binghamton and Zoran Sunik from Cornell. The talk included a brief history of the problem along with the presentation of recent work that has been done.
Friedrich gave a good talk. It was well balanced between theory and applications. He also gave some non-standard applications of the cake-cutting algorithms.
Following the talk Ithaca College Professor John Maceli accompanied our Binghamton and Cornell guests to dinner at Moosewood restaurant in downtown Ithaca. During dinner we discussed end of term things along with what the graduating students at Binghamton would be doing next year. We also discussed Math education at Binghamton .
In conclusion the program was , as always, excellent.
