The PFF group arrived in Oneonta at 1:30pm, for a meeting with Dr. Michael P. Merilan, our dean of Science and Social Science. The topic of the dean's presentation was "New faculty from an Administrative Prospective". The professional life and role of new, tenure-track faculty in a four-year arts and sciences context was considered. Using SUNY and SUNY-Oneonta as prototypes, the expectations for and personnel processes related to new faculty were explored. The dean's presentation was followed by a long question and answer session, which included a discussion of survival strategies for new faculty. Around 3:30pm, the PFF fellows gathered with Oneonta faculty and students in our Mathematical Sciences commons room for refreshments. The refreshments were followed by Friedrich Kluempen's talk entitled "Dividing a cake among hungry siblings, can it be done without a food fight?". The visit ended with dinner in one of the local Italian restaurants.
