SUBJECT: A Survey for the Preparing Future Faculty Program
The end of the academic year is near, and so the first year of activities
for the Preparing Future Faculty Program, as established through Professor
L.C. Kappe's grant, is also coming to an end. In the fall, we distributed
a survey so that we could make a few initial observations about the preparation
of graduate students to become faculty members. After a year of our program's
activities, we again need to ask you to answer a few questions. This survey
won't take you more than 15 minutes to complete, and it is important that
you return it to Marge no later than Friday May 19. She will check your
name off of a list so that we will know that you have responded. Thanks
in advance for your response.
The format is a little different for this particular survey. Next to
each of the numbers 1-7, a particular aspect of faculty life is listed.
In the space provided, please comment on the following:
1) How prepared are you personally to deal with this aspect of faculty
life.
2) How effective has the Preparing Future Faculty Program at SUNY-Binghamton
been in educating you about this aspect of faculty life.
After an additional multiple choice question, there are a few questions
which ask you to make general comments that will assist in future planning
for the program.
1) Faculty roles outside of teaching and research, such as committee
work.
2) Possible differences between being a faculty member at a 2 year college
or 4 year college and being a faculty member at an institution like SUNY-Binghamton
3) Teaching students who come from a wide variety of backgrounds
4) Working on research projects with undergraduates
5) Advising undergraduate or graduate students
6) Balancing your teaching and research responsibilities
7) Incorporating technology in your teaching
Multiple Choice Question: Plese circle the letter of the most appropriate answer. Which of the following aspects of being a faculty member do you need to learn the most about?
a) Balancing time for teaching and research
b) Teaching introductory math courses
c) Teaching a wide variety of undergraduate math courses
d) Participating in faculty roles other than teaching, such as committee work.
e) Working with students individually as either an academic advisor
or research advisor
.
f) Incorporating technology into your teaching
