THE STOCHASTIC MODELING SEMINAR

Summer 2012

Department of Mathematical Sciences, Binghamton University

DATE: May 22
TIME: 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm
PLACE: LN 2205
SPEAKER: Yifan Xu
TOPIC: Probability Generating Functions & The Simple Branching Process
Abstract: Many stochastic processes involve non-negative integer valued random variables and probability generating function is a powerful tool to analyze them. We will first review properties of probability generating functions, especially their connection to convolutions and random sums. As an example we next introduce the simple branching process and study its asymptotic properties.
